A RICH FOOD SECURITY HISTORY

For more than 200 years settlers have lived along the shores of Twillingate.  Living here required making the most of a short growing season and a method of storing vegetables through the winter.  The soil is shallow and rocky requiring root cellars to be constructed above ground.

The density of root cellars at Twillingate is a reflection of a vibrant community where livelihoods depended on getting the most from the land and sea to survive.  For more than 200 years root cellars have allowed settlers to maintain  this lifestyle.  Few are in use today but those that are show continued traditions passed from one family member to another.
